Aphrodisiac Scents

14 September 2025 By LA Leave a Comment

Wonder what candle or oil fragrances are known as aphrodisiac scents? To be clear, I am referring to an agent (such as a scent) that arouses or is held to arouse sexual desire.

which scents are aphrodisiacs?

I am not making any medical claims, nor am I talking about aromatherapy. I’m merely sharing what aromas have been reported to be aphrodisiac scents that tend to get them in the mood for love. Reported by whom? The elusive internet, of course.

A wide variety of fragrances have been reported to have qualities of aphrodisiac scents, with some having more scientific research to support the claims than others. Individual responses to scents can vary greatly, and the power of a scent often lies in its ability to evoke a positive mood, reduce stress, or create a romantic ambiance.

The most commonly reported aphrodisiac scents:

Sweet and Gourmand Scents

  • Vanilla: Often cited as a natural aphrodisiac, vanilla has a warm, comforting, and sweet aroma that is believed to create feelings of euphoria and relaxation. Some studies have shown that it can increase arousal in men.
  • Pumpkin Pie & Lavender: This specific combination has been cited in a study to have a significant stimulating effect on men. Researchers speculate that this may be due to the vanilla and cinnamon in the pie, combined with the relaxing effect of lavender.
  • Cinnamon: This warming spice has a long history as an aphrodisiac. Its spicy and sweet aroma is believed to increase blood flow and can be used to create a passionate atmosphere.
  • Black Licorice: While divisive, the scent of black licorice (anise) has been shown in some studies to increase arousal in men, particularly when combined with other scents like doughnuts.

Floral Scents

  • Jasmine: Known as the “perfume of love” in some cultures, jasmine has a rich, sweet, and intoxicating aroma. It is believed to increase alertness and improve mood, which can contribute to a heightened libido.
  • Ylang-Ylang: This tropical flower has a strong, sweet, and slightly fruity scent. It’s known for its ability to reduce anxiety and promote feelings of euphoria, which can help set a sensual mood.
  • Rose: A timeless symbol of love and romance, rose scents are believed to reduce stress and boost confidence, helping to create a relaxing environment for intimacy.
  • Lavender: While often associated with relaxation, the scent of lavender can also be arousing. It is thought to both calm the mind and body while also stimulating desire.
  • Lily of the Valley: This delicate floral scent is used in many perfumes and has been suggested to have potent aphrodisiac effects.

Earthy and Woody Scents

  • Sandalwood: Used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, sandalwood has a warm, woody, and creamy aroma. It is often touted for its relaxing and antidepressant properties, which can help create an intimate and trusting atmosphere.
  • Patchouli: With a musky and earthy scent, patchouli has been linked to sensuality and romance for centuries. It’s believed to stimulate the release of endorphins and increase blood flow, which can enhance arousal.
  • Musk/Ambrette: These scents have warm, animalistic aromas that are thought to have pheromone-like properties, enhancing attraction and desire. Ambrette, also known as musk mallow, is a plant-based alternative to animal musk.

Spicy and Citrus Scents

  • Ginger: The warm and spicy scent of ginger has a long history as an aphrodisiac. It is believed to be a circulatory stimulant, which can aid in blood flow to the sexual organs.
  • Orange/Neroli: The scent of orange has been shown to increase blood flow to sexual organs in some studies. Citrus scents in general are known to boost mood and reduce anxiety, making a person more receptive to stimuli.
  • Peppermint: This crisp and invigorating scent is believed to awaken the senses, increase alertness, and stimulate the brain, which can contribute to arousal.
  • Pink Grapefruit: The scent of pink grapefruit is believed by some to be particularly alluring and can also help boost mood and reduce anxiety.
